Trematophoma lignicola is a pathogenic fungus known to cause bark and wood necrosis in various plant species. As a member of the mitosporic fungi (deuteromycetes), this organism functions by colonizing the bark tissues, leading to structural damage and physiological stress in affected trees and shrubs. It is primarily recognized as a weak parasite that exploits existing wounds in the host tissue.

The host range of Trematophoma lignicola includes a variety of ornamental and fruit-bearing trees. The fungus typically gains entry into the plant through mechanical injuries, pruning cuts, frost cracks, or sunscald lesions. Once inside, it colonizes the inner bark and cambium layer, gradually interfering with the vascular system and depriving the host of essential nutrients and water flow.

Signs of infection often manifest as discolored, sunken areas of the bark that eventually turn into necrotic lesions. As the disease progresses, the epidermis may crack, and small, dark fruiting bodies known as pycnidia become visible on the surface. These structures house the spores responsible for the spread of the pathogen, which can lead to branch dieback and, if untreated, the gradual decline of the entire tree.

The spread and development of the fungus are heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. Spores are disseminated by rain splash, wind currents, and insect activity. Dense planting and poor sanitation practices further facilitate the spread, as the pathogen thrives in environments where host defense mechanisms are already weakened by stress or injury.

Effective management and prevention of the disease require a combination of cultural and chemical interventions:

  • Regular pruning of dead or diseased branches to reduce the pathogen load.
  • Proper wound sealing using pruning sealers or wound dressings on fresh cuts.
  • Preventing sunscald through trunk whitewashing or shading.
  • Application of copper-based fungicides during the dormant season or early spring.
  • Maintaining optimal plant health through adequate fertilization and irrigation to support tree resilience.
