The causative agent of the disease is the fungus genus Trematosphaeria, a group of ascomycetes that acts as a plant pathogen. This fungus is known for its ability to infect woody tissues and leaves of various agricultural and ornamental plant species. It primarily functions as a necrotrophic parasite, causing tissue death and decay within the host organism.

The disease primarily targets fruit-bearing trees, shrubs, and certain woody ornamentals. It often exploits physical wounds on the stems or branches, which serve as entry points for the fungal mycelium. Once established, the fungus spreads within the bark and vascular system, disrupting the nutrient supply to the plant.

Symptoms of infection are characterized by the appearance of dark, sunken lesions on the bark and foliage. As the disease progresses, these lesions enlarge and may cause cracking or peeling of the outer bark layers. Close inspection usually reveals small, black, fruiting structures called perithecia embedded in the affected plant surface, where fungal spores are produced.

The development and spread of the disease are heavily influenced by environmental factors such as high humidity and rainfall. Fungal spores are disseminated via splashing raindrops and wind, allowing the pathogen to move between plants. The fungus survives unfavorable conditions by overwintering in plant debris, infected branches, and leaf litter on the orchard floor.

Effective management requires a combination of sanitation and chemical interventions. Regular pruning of infected branches is essential to reduce the inoculum load in the garden. Applying protective fungicides during the early stages of the growing season can prevent the spread of the disease. Furthermore, maintaining overall plant vigor through proper fertilization and irrigation helps the host mount a better defense against the infection.
