Trematosphaeria pertusa is an ascomycete fungus within the Dothideomycetes class, often recognized as a pathogen affecting woody plants. Primarily acting as a weak parasite or saprobe, this fungus colonizes bark and stems, particularly where the plant has suffered mechanical injury or environmental stress. Its ecological role involves the degradation of host tissues, which can lead to localized necrosis.

The host range of this pathogen includes various broad-leaved trees and shrubs. In commercial orchards and forestry, Trematosphaeria pertusa is frequently detected on branches that have begun to show signs of decline. While it is rarely the sole cause of death for healthy, vigorous trees, it significantly contributes to the dieback process in weakened hosts.

The visual symptoms of the infection are characterized by the emergence of black, erupted pseudothecia—minute, flask-shaped fungal structures found on the bark surface. These bodies often appear as dense clusters, giving the bark a rough, spotted appearance. The development of the pathogen is highly dependent on humidity levels and microclimate conditions.
