Tremella is a genus of fungi belonging to the class Tremellomycetes, which under certain ecological conditions can appear on woody plants, signaling an underlying health issue. While many species are known as jelly fungi, their presence on living trees often indicates that the plant's bark integrity has been compromised, providing a substrate for colonization and growth.

The pathogen type is often classified as a facultative parasite or opportunistic epiphyte. These organisms thrive on the moisture held within damaged bark or necrotized wood tissues. They do not typically kill a healthy tree directly but contribute to the overall degradation of the bark surface, creating a micro-environment that fosters other harmful pathogens.

The development and spread of Tremella are driven by high environmental humidity, poor air circulation, and the presence of dead organic matter on the plant surface. The spores are primarily wind-dispersed, meaning that once the fungus establishes itself in a garden, it can easily spread to other susceptible trees if conditions remain favorable for fungal growth.

Effective management and prevention strategies are essential to maintain tree health and limit the spread of the fungus:
