Tremella aurantialba is a specialized mycopathogenic fungus that primarily acts as a parasite on other fungi of the Aleurodiscus genus. In an agronomical and silvicultural sense, it is categorized as a biological agent that complicates the health of trees by interfering with the symbiotic and defensive relationships established on the bark and trunk surface.
This fungus typically impacts hardwood and softwood trees, including oak and fir species. Because it targets the parasitic fungal colonies already inhabiting the tree, it is often seen as a tertiary stressor that accelerates the degradation of tree vitality, especially in environments where the host tree is already suffering from biotic or abiotic factors.
The primary diagnostic symptoms include the development of vivid orange to yellow gelatinous fruiting bodies. These structures appear on the bark during humid periods and have a rubbery texture that is highly distinct in the forest landscape. When conditions change, these bodies may dry out, becoming shriveled and crust-like, but they retain their ability to release spores when rehydrated.
Environmental conditions are the main drivers of the fungus's life cycle. High humidity and moderate temperatures are essential for the rapid expansion of the mycelium. The spread is primarily facilitated by wind currents transporting basidiospores, which land on bark fissures or areas previously colonized by the host fungus, allowing the infection to establish itself quickly in dense canopy areas.
The economic and ecological impact stems from the weakened defense mechanisms of the affected trees, which often leads to increased susceptibility to rot and wood-boring insects. Management strategies focus on sanitation, such as thinning stands to improve airflow, removing severely infested bark, and maintaining overall tree vigor. Chemical control is rarely practiced as a primary measure, with integrated pest management serving as the most effective long-term approach.
