It is primarily recognized for its unique ability to parasitize other fungi, particularly those that thrive on decaying wood, thereby influencing the succession of wood-degrading organisms in forest ecosystems.
The causal agent is the Tremella fuciformis fungus itself. It exhibits a specialized type of disease known as mycoparasitism. By infecting the mycelium of host fungi, specifically those in the genus Annulohypoxylon, it derives its nutrients and thrives. This interaction disrupts the natural decomposition processes of its fungal hosts, potentially altering the rate at which wood breaks down in the environment.
The host range includes various deciduous hardwood species. It is typically observed on fallen or weakened branches and trunks where the primary host fungi have already established colonies.
