The yellow brain fungus (Tremella lutescens) is a gelatinous fungus belonging to the Tremellales order. In agricultural practice, it is often identified as a secondary colonizer that grows on the bark of deciduous trees. While it primarily acts as a parasite on other fungi, its presence on fruit trees and ornamental shrubs is a reliable indicator that the host plant is suffering from underlying issues, such as wood decay or severe physiological stress.
This fungus typically targets trees that have been compromised by mechanical injury, environmental stress, or initial fungal decay. It does not penetrate the healthy cambium of a strong tree, but it thrives on the dead or decaying organic matter found in neglected orchards. Recognizing it early is crucial, as its presence points to the need for immediate tree health assessment and site sanitation.
The fungus manifests as bright yellow or orange-yellow gelatinous, convoluted masses that emerge from the bark or wood cracks. During wet weather, these fruiting bodies absorb moisture and expand significantly. In dry conditions, they shrivel into thin, inconspicuous, crust-like layers that are easy to miss. This ability to cycle between states allows the fungus to persist in varying microclimates.
The development of Tremella lutescens is highly dependent on humidity levels and air circulation. It thrives in environments where moisture remains trapped on bark surfaces for extended periods. Orchards with poor canopy management and excessive shade are prime habitats for this fungus, as the lack of airflow prevents wood from drying quickly after rainfall.
Management and prevention focus primarily on cultural practices. Sanitizing the orchard is the most effective approach; this includes removing deadwood, pruning away damaged branches, and properly treating tree wounds. By ensuring the tree's health and optimizing the orchard's microclimate, one can prevent the conditions necessary for this fungus to colonize and contribute to the further decay of the wood.
