Description
The family Tremellodendropsidaceae consists of basidiomycete fungi primarily characterized by their unique, coral-like or branched fruiting bodies. While they are predominantly saprotrophic, interacting with decaying organic matter, their presence can sometimes negatively influence the health of seedlings and sensitive ornamental plants in nursery environments.
The pathogen, belonging to the order Tremellodendropsidales, operates by decomposing complex organic compounds in the soil. Although it is not categorized as a primary, aggressive plant pathogen, it can opportunistically colonize the rhizosphere of stressed plants. This interaction often leads to physiological weakening rather than acute necrosis of the host plant.
Susceptible hosts mainly include woody species, forest trees, and some shrubs planted in areas with high humidity. The diagnostic signs are the presence of distinct, often pale or light-colored, branched structures emerging from the soil base. Affected plants may show reduced vigor, stunted leaf development, and increased sensitivity to environmental stresses like drought or nutrient deficiency.
Development is heavily favored by cool, moist conditions and poor soil drainage. The fungus spreads via basidiospores that require water films for dispersal and germination. High organic content in the soil combined with poor ventilation around the root collar creates an ideal environment for the expansion of the fungal colony.
Management and prevention strategies focus on ecological control. Key measures include: ensuring proper soil drainage, managing surface moisture, and removing accumulated debris that supports fungal growth. Chemical control is rarely necessary; however, in high-density production systems, applying preventive fungicides can help maintain crop health and minimize the colonization of the substrate by these fungi.
