Triblidiaceae is a family of fungi belonging to the order Ostropales. In forest pathology, these fungi are recognized as having both saprotrophic and weak parasitic tendencies. They often inhabit the bark and wood of woody plants, utilizing decaying organic matter as their primary source of nutrition, though they may infect stressed or weakened living trees.

The host range for these fungi encompasses a variety of coniferous and deciduous tree species. Triblidiaceae is commonly associated with damaged areas of the bark, including wounds from pruning, frost cracks, or insect activity. These entry points provide the necessary environment for the fungi to establish and begin their colonization process.

The primary diagnostic sign of the presence of Triblidiaceae is the formation of apothecia on the surface of the bark. These fruiting bodies appear as dark, often disc-shaped or elliptical structures. When conditions are favourable, these bodies mature and release spores, which are then disseminated throughout the canopy or forest stand.

The development of the disease is strictly dictated by environmental factors, particularly relative humidity and moisture levels. High humidity levels, combined with temperatures that remain consistent, facilitate the release and germination of spores. Once a tree's defense system is compromised by drought or other stresses, the fungal expansion accelerates significantly.

While the economic impact can vary, severe infestations contribute to the structural degradation of the wood and the premature death of branches. Effective management and prevention strategies rely heavily on silvicultural practices. Key measures include maintaining tree vigor, pruning dead or diseased wood, and ensuring proper sanitation to minimize the buildup of fungal inoculum in the local environment.
