Description
Triblidium is a genus of ascomycete fungi that cause damage to the bark and wood of various deciduous tree species. This pathogen belongs to a group of saprotrophic or weakly parasitic organisms that become active when the plant's immunity is weakened or when tissues are physically damaged. The main pathogen, Triblidium caliciiforme, specializes in decomposing bark, which leads to premature tissue necrosis and exposure of the vascular cambium.
The primary hosts for this pathogen are broad-leaved species, particularly oaks, elms, ashes, and other forest trees. The pathogen is commonly found in dense stands, urban parks, and windbreaks. In rare instances, the disease can spread to fruit trees if they are situated in close proximity to infected forest stands and have existing bark damage caused by frost cracks or sunscald.
Symptoms of the infection are characterized by the emergence of distinct fungal fruiting bodies on the bark. These are typically black, disk-shaped, or linear structures that rupture the epidermis. In areas where the fungal colonies develop, the bark cracks, turns a darker color, and gradually begins to peel away. Severe infections result in cambial necrosis, which obstructs sap flow and leads to the gradual dieback of branches or the eventual death of the entire tree.
The development of the disease is closely linked to environmental humidity. Fungal spores are disseminated by wind and rain splashes, easily entering bark crevices. Ideal conditions for colonization include extended periods of rainfall, moderate temperatures, and poor air circulation within the tree canopy. In crowded plantations, the risk of infection significantly increases due to the formation of a high-humidity microclimate that favors spore germination.
The economic impact of Triblidium lies in the reduction of both the aesthetic value and the physiological vigor of trees. While the fungus is often viewed as a secondary pathogen, it significantly accelerates the degradation of tissues in stressed plants. For protection and prevention, it is recommended to implement sanitary pruning of infected branches, promptly treat trunk wounds with fungicides, and maintain appropriate stand density to ensure adequate ventilation of the trees.
