Triblidium caliciforme is a fungal pathogen known for colonizing the bark and wood of various tree species. This pathogen primarily infects hardwood species, such as oak and ash, though it can manifest on other woody plants. The entry points for the fungus are typically existing wounds, including frost cracks, sunburns, or areas damaged by boring insects, where the exposed tissues provide an ideal environment for the establishment of the mycelium.

These conditions allow for the maturation and dispersal of fungal spores, which can be spread via rain splash or wind currents to adjacent trees or healthy parts of the same host during periods of prolonged wet weather.
