Tribonema viride is a filamentous yellow-green algae species that acts as a significant nuisance in agricultural systems, particularly in flooded environments such as rice paddies. Although categorized as an alga, it causes widespread crop damage by inhibiting the normal physiological functions of aquatic or semi-aquatic crops, effectively acting as a biological pathogen or invasive weed.

The primary crop affected by this organism is rice, grown under irrigation. Furthermore, Tribonema viride poses a threat to hydroponic systems and nursery operations where aquatic conditions are maintained. In these settings, the algae compete for nutrients and light, drastically altering the growth environment of the intended crops.
