Description

Tribonematales represents an order of yellow-green algae that, while primarily aquatic or terrestrial, can become an agronomic issue in intensive crop production. These filamentous organisms thrive in environments where moisture levels remain consistently high, leading to the colonization of soil surfaces and greenhouse benches.

The primary nature of this "disease" is physiological rather than parasitic. The algae form a dense, photosynthetic mat on the surface of the soil or growing medium. This layer creates a physical barrier that restricts gas exchange between the root zone and the atmosphere, often causing root hypoxia in sensitive seedlings.

Affected crops include greenhouse-grown seedlings, vegetables, and ornamental plants that require frequent irrigation. Heavy or poorly drained field soils are also susceptible, particularly after periods of prolonged rainfall when the surface remains saturated for extended durations.

Symptoms are easily identified by the presence of a green or slimy brown mat covering the soil surface. As the algae proliferate, they compete for nitrogen and other soil nutrients, which manifests as stunted plant growth, yellowing (chlorosis) of the cotyledons, and an increased susceptibility to damping-off fungi.

Control strategies focus on moisture management and soil aeration. Increasing the frequency of surface cultivation to break the algal mat, improving drainage, and applying a layer of sand or perlite on the soil surface can effectively suppress development. In severe cases, approved algaecides or copper-based treatments may be utilized to sanitize the growing area.
