Trichaptum is a genus of wood-decay fungi belonging to the family Polyporaceae. These fungi are primary agents of white rot, a process where the fungus consumes lignin and cellulose, effectively breaking down the wood structure. While they serve a vital role in natural decomposition, they act as destructive pathogens in orchard management and forestry.
The fungus typically attacks both coniferous and deciduous trees, including species such as pine, spruce, birch, and various fruit-bearing trees. Infection usually begins at sites of mechanical injury, such as pruning wounds, broken branches, or frost cracks, allowing the fungal mycelium to penetrate and colonize the inner tissues of the host plant.
The most visible sign of an active infection is the emergence of small, leathery or velvety fruiting bodies (brackets) on the bark surface. These bodies often exhibit distinct purple or brownish hues with a porous or tooth-like underside. Internally, the infected wood loses its structural integrity, appearing bleached, spongy, and brittle, which significantly weakens the tree's core.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development of Trichaptum. High humidity, mild temperatures, and the presence of decaying organic matter create a favorable environment for sporulation and colonization. Spores are primarily dispersed through wind, rainwater splash, and insect vectors, allowing the fungus to spread rapidly across dense or unmanaged tree stands.
