Description

The Violet-pored bracket (Trichaptum biforme) is a prominent wood-decay fungus responsible for causing white rot in various hardwood species. As a saprotrophic and occasionally parasitic organism, it plays a critical role in forest ecosystems by decomposing dead organic matter, though it can become a significant problem in managed orchards and forestry.

This fungus primarily attacks broad-leaved trees, including birch, aspen, oak, and maple. Infection typically occurs when spores land on fresh wounds, broken branches, or exposed heartwood. Once established, the mycelium penetrates deep into the vascular tissue, effectively breaking down the woody structure of the tree.

Symptoms of an infection include the emergence of shelf-like fruiting bodies on the trunk or stumps. These brackets are recognizable by their hairy, grey-to-brown upper surface and a distinct violet-colored pore surface (hymenophore). Internally, the affected wood becomes light-colored, bleached, and soft as the fungus degrades the lignin.

The spread and development of Trichaptum biforme are highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly moisture levels and temperature. The fungus thrives in humid environments, especially where there is an accumulation of decaying woody debris. High moisture facilitates spore germination and mycelial expansion across the host's surface.

Economic damage is associated with the loss of timber quality and the structural weakening of trees, which poses a safety risk in managed areas. Effective control and prevention strategies involve:

  • Regular sanitation of the site by removing dead wood and stumps.
  • Pruning branches correctly to prevent unnecessary exposure of inner wood.
  • Maintaining tree vigor to help them defend against opportunistic fungal pathogens.
