Trichocintractia is a genus of basidiomycete fungi belonging to the order Ustilaginales, commonly known as smut fungi. These fungi are specialized obligate parasites that target specific members of the Cyperaceae family. The infection typically results in the replacement of the host's floral parts with masses of fungal spores, preventing the development of seeds.
The primary hosts for this pathogen are plants within the genus Rhynchospora and related sedges. While these species are not staple food crops, they play a vital role in wetland ecology and natural pastures. The presence of Trichocintractia can affect the biodiversity of such areas and reduce the nutritional quality of forage in affected regions.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by the hypertrophy and deformation of the host's inflorescences. Instead of normal reproductive structures, plants develop sori filled with dark, powdery teliospores. These signs are most visible during the flowering stage, where the infection interrupts the reproductive cycle and stunts the overall development of the affected tillers.
The development and dissemination of Trichocintractia are heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly humidity and temperature. Teliospores are dispersed primarily by wind and water splashes. Once they land on a susceptible host during the critical flowering phase, the spores germinate, and the mycelium invades the tissue to establish the infection.

Effective strategies include sanitation practices such as the removal of infected plant debris to reduce the inoculum load.
