Note: Trichoderma asperellum is not a plant pathogen; it is a highly beneficial fungus used as a biological control agent (BCA) to protect crops from soil-borne diseases. It is widely recognized in agriculture for its ability to suppress plant pathogens.
The primary role of this fungus is to inhabit the rhizosphere of plants, where it forms a symbiotic-like relationship. Through the production of extracellular enzymes and antibiotic compounds, it suppresses the growth and activity of soil-borne pathogens, including Fusarium, Pythium, and Rhizoctonia species that cause root rot.
Trichoderma asperellum exerts its influence through mycoparasitism, nutrient competition, and the induction of systemic resistance in the host plant. By colonizing the root surface, it physicaly blocks pathogens from infecting the plant tissues, effectively acting as a shield for the plant's root system during critical growth stages.
For optimal performance, the fungus requires specific environmental conditions. It thrives in well-aerated soil with moderate moisture levels and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C. In field conditions, its efficacy depends on the compatibility with other soil amendments and the timing of application, which should ideally occur at sowing or during the early seedling stage.
