Trichoderma stromaticum is a notable fungal pathogen known for its impact on cocoa trees (Theobroma cacao). Unlike the saprophytic or biocontrol strains of the Trichoderma genus that are beneficial in soil, T. stromaticum has evolved to become a specialized parasite, affecting the structural integrity and reproductive potential of cocoa plantations.
The fungus specifically targets young shoots, floral cushions, and developing cocoa pods. By infiltrating these tissues, the pathogen triggers an abnormal growth response and necrosis. The most distinguishing feature of the infection is the formation of dense fungal stroma that erupts through the host's epidermis, which significantly disrupts nutrient flow and tissue health.
Symptoms of the disease include the development of dark, hard stromatic structures on the surface of branches and pods. Affected areas typically show signs of tissue hypertrophy, followed by dieback of the twigs. When the infection reaches the pods, it results in premature shriveling and loss of quality, rendering the beans inside unsuitable for commercial harvest.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the proliferation of this fungus. Trichoderma stromaticum thrives in tropical climates characterized by high rainfall and humidity, which facilitate the dispersal of conidia. Spores are primarily spread by wind and water splashing, making dense and poorly maintained plantations highly vulnerable to rapid outbreaks.

- Ensure adequate spacing between trees to improve airflow and reduce micro-humidity.
