Trichoderma tomentosum is a fungal species within the Trichoderma genus that, while often associated with beneficial biocontrol, can also behave as an opportunistic pathogen in agricultural settings. It targets weakened plant tissues, particularly in glasshouse environments where environmental control is suboptimal, leading to significant economic losses in nursery and ornamental production.
The host range of this fungus includes various vegetables and ornamental plants. It primarily affects the root system and the lower stem area. In high-density planting conditions, the pathogen spreads rapidly, attacking seedlings that are already stressed due to poor drainage, improper irrigation, or nutrient imbalances in the soil media.
Key symptoms of the infection include the appearance of a soft, white to light green, felt-like mycelium growing on the plant surface. As the infection progresses, the tissues beneath the fungal mat lose their structural integrity, turning mushy and necrotic. This leads to visible wilting, stunted development, and potential collapse of the entire plant structure.
The development of Trichoderma tomentosum is heavily influenced by high humidity, poor aeration, and the presence of abundant organic matter in the substrate. Temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C create an ideal environment for rapid colonization. The pathogen is highly resilient and can persist in soil and equipment for extended periods if sanitation protocols are neglected.
