Description
Tricholoma albidum is a basidiomycete fungus from the Tricholomataceae family. In the context of forestry and plant production, it is typically recognized as a mycorrhizal partner. Although it is not a primary plant pathogen, it interacts closely with the root systems of various woody species, making its management relevant for professional nursery operations.
The causative biological agent is the fungus mycelium, which develops an ectomycorrhizal relationship with host plants. Unlike parasitic infections that destroy plant tissues, this fungus creates a beneficial symbiotic structure. The harm, if any, is usually incidental, related to competing for substrate resources or excessive density of the fungal mat in containerized growing media.
The primary hosts affected by this association are young conifers and certain deciduous seedlings. While these symbiotic relationships are generally healthy for forest ecosystems, in controlled agricultural environments, the aggressive growth of fungal networks can impede root aeration if substrate drainage is poor or if the seedlings are overcrowded.
The signs and symptoms of colonization include the appearance of white, cottony fungal strands (mycelium) covering the root tips. This should not be confused with root rot pathogens like Phytophthora or Pythium, which typically cause tissue darkening and necrosis. The optimal conditions for its growth involve acidic soil, high organic matter content, and consistent moisture levels.
Protection and preventive measures focus on nursery hygiene and soil management.
