While primarily functioning as a decomposer in forest ecosystems, under specific conditions, it can adopt a pathogenic role, targeting the root collars and vascular systems of weakened or stressed agricultural crops.

The causative agent belongs to the basidiomycete group, responsible for inducing root decay and tissue necrosis. This type of fungal disease compromises the plant's ability to uptake water and nutrients from the soil, leading to a systemic decline in the host's overall health and vitality over a period of several seasons.

The disease typically impacts forest species, ornamental trees, and shrubs, especially those cultivated in nursery environments. Vulnerability increases significantly if the plants are situated in soil with poor structure or in regions where root damage has occurred due to cultivation practices or pest infestations, allowing the fungus to colonize the damaged areas.

Symptoms of the infection manifest as stunted growth, yellowing of the foliage (chlorosis), and gradual dieback starting from the canopy. If the root zone is examined, one can observe mycelial mats and dark lesions on the roots. In advanced cases, the tissue loses structural integrity, becoming friable and emitting a characteristic scent of decomposition common to wood-decaying fungi.
