Josserand's tricholoma (Latin: Tricholoma josserandii) is a species of gilled mushroom in the Tricholomataceae family. While it is not a phytopathogen causing crop diseases, it is recognized as a toxic species, posing a potential risk in gardens, landscapes, and near agricultural plots where humans or livestock may come into contact with it.

The organism is a basidiomycete fungus that primarily lives as a saprotroph, decomposing organic matter within the soil. It is often found associated with trees, forming mycorrhizal relationships. From an agronomic perspective, it acts as a bio-contaminant rather than a crop disease agent, as it does not infect plant tissues but colonizes the soil environment surrounding trees.

Key identification features include a greyish-brown, radially fibrillose cap that often cracks in dry conditions. The gills are distinct for sometimes showing reddish spots or tinges. The presence of these mushrooms is often triggered by favorable environmental conditions, specifically cool temperatures and high soil moisture, which allow the mycelium to produce fruit bodies.

The spread of this fungus is primarily through spore dispersal, facilitated by wind. Once the spores land in nutrient-rich soil, they germinate and form new mycelial networks. Because this species favors undisturbed soil with high organic content, cultivated areas that are neglected or left with thick layers of leaf litter are highly susceptible to colonization.

Management and prevention focus on eliminating the conditions that support fungal growth. Key practices include:

  • Regular tillage or mechanical disturbance of the soil surface to disrupt mycelial growth.
  • Effective management of organic waste, such as removing fallen leaves and decaying wood from orchards.
  • Monitoring areas used for grazing or children's play to ensure these toxic mushrooms are not present.
