The genus Tricholomopsis consists of saprotrophic fungi that play a dual role in nature. While they are vital decomposers in forest ecosystems, their presence on living garden trees is often interpreted as a sign of decay or structural weakness, leading to long-term damage of the wood tissues.

The fungus acts as a wood-decay agent, specifically targeting dead or damaged sections of a tree. It initiates the decomposition process by secreting enzymes that break down the complex lignocellulosic matrix of the wood. This turns healthy structural wood into soft, spongy matter, eventually compromising the tree's physical stability.

Symptoms of the infection typically include the appearance of bright, fleshy, scaly-capped fruiting bodies on the bark or near the roots of the affected tree. Inside the trunk, the damage manifests as white or brown rot, significantly reducing the density and mechanical strength of the timber, making the tree susceptible to mechanical breakage.

The development of Tricholomopsis is favored by damp conditions, high humidity, and the presence of open wounds or cracks in the tree bark. These fungi thrive in environments where wood moisture content is relatively high, allowing the spores to germinate easily once they settle in the damaged tree tissue.

Preventive measures are centered on tree hygiene. It is essential to prune infected branches properly and seal any large wounds to prevent spore entry. Removing decaying stumps or fallen debris near healthy trees is also a critical step in breaking the infection cycle. Maintaining tree vitality through balanced fertilization and proper irrigation helps the plant resist colonization by such fungi.
