While its main host range is human, it is recognized in agricultural mycology as a contaminant that can persist in soil, organic debris, and greenhouse substrates, posing a risk to the development of cultivated plants and potentially interacting with other soil microflora in an ecosystem.
The pathogen spreads mainly through arthrospores, which are highly resilient structures. In agricultural environments, these spores can be introduced via contaminated organic material or tools. Once the pathogen colonizes a substrate, it can infect weak tissues of plants, particularly in indoor cultivation systems where organic nutrients are readily available for the fungus to thrive and propagate.
Symptoms of infestation often manifest as necrotic lesions on roots or stems, accompanied by the presence of a distinct violet-pigmented fungal growth. This pigmentation is a diagnostic feature of the species. Infected plants exhibit signs of stunted growth, wilting, and, in advanced stages of disease, tissue decay caused by the fungal enzymes that degrade plant organic matter.
The development of Trichophyton violaceum is driven by specific environmental conditions, primarily high humidity and stable, warm temperatures between 20°C and 28°C. In greenhouses, poor ventilation and inadequate sanitation practices are the main factors that promote the rapid spread of spores from the substrate to the host plants, leading to localized disease outbreaks.
Effective control and prevention strategies rely on strict phytosanitary measures. Essential steps include the rigorous sterilization of tools, pots, and growing media before planting. Growers should maintain proper air circulation to reduce humidity levels and perform regular inspections for signs of fungal growth. If an outbreak occurs, affected plants should be promptly removed, and the surrounding area should be treated with appropriate broad-spectrum fungicides.
