The order Trichosphaeriales consists of microscopic fungi within the Sordariomycetes class. While many are saprotrophic, some members serve as opportunistic pathogens that impact agricultural and forest plant species. Understanding their biology is essential for managing the health of perennial crops, as they often target damaged or stressed tissues.
These fungi are typically characterized by the formation of perithecia, often adorned with hairs, which function as spore-bearing structures. The disease process usually involves the colonization of the host's outer layers, which can progress deeper into the vascular tissues under favorable conditions. This type of infection often leads to structural damage and nutrient pathway disruption within the host plant.
Typical symptoms of a Trichosphaeriales infestation include localized tissue necrosis, the appearance of dark discolored lesions on the bark or stems, and the visible presence of black, pimple-like fruiting bodies. In woody plants, this often manifests as "dieback" symptoms, where branches dry out and lose vitality over a period of weeks or months.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the proliferation of these fungi. High relative humidity and the presence of moisture films on the surface of plant organs are primary catalysts for spore germination. Furthermore, poor air circulation in orchards and nurseries, combined with high canopy density, creates a conducive microclimate for the fungus to spread rapidly.
