Trichosporonosis is a fungal disease caused by yeast-like fungi of the genus Trichosporon. In an agronomic context, these organisms typically act as saprotrophs or opportunistic pathogens capable of infecting plant tissues that have been weakened by mechanical injury or adverse environmental stress factors.

This pathogen is capable of affecting a wide range of agricultural crops, including vegetables, fruits, and industrial plants. The Trichosporon genus poses a significant threat in storage facilities and greenhouses, where high humidity facilitates the rapid growth of mycelium on fruits and root vegetables.

Symptoms of the infection manifest as the appearance of whitish or cream-colored mucous coatings that may darken over time. Soft rot spots form on plant tissues, accompanied by a distinct odor, which leads to rapid degradation of quality and spoilage of produce during storage.

Favorable conditions for the intensive development of the fungus include high relative humidity (above 85%) and temperatures ranging from 20 to 28°C. Spore dispersal occurs through the air, water droplets, or contaminated agricultural equipment and storage containers.

The damage caused by this disease results in the total loss of yield when fruits and seed materials are infected. Preventive measures include strictly following crop rotation practices, disinfecting storage areas, maintaining optimal post-harvest storage conditions, and timely removal of crop debris that may serve as a reservoir for the infection.
