Trimmatostroma scutellare is a pathogenic fungus responsible for causing a specific type of bark disease in trees. This organism primarily affects the cortex and subcortical tissues of woody plants, leading to the development of necroses. As a pathogen, it disrupts the physiological processes of the host plant, potentially hindering the transport of nutrients and water.
The disease is most commonly observed on various broad-leaved trees, particularly species within the Salicaceae and Betulaceae families. Willows and alders are among the most susceptible hosts. In nursery settings or dense forest plantations, the disease can spread rapidly, impacting the vitality and aesthetic value of the trees significantly.
The clinical symptoms of this infection are characterized by the emergence of black, crust-like fungal sporulation structures on the surface of the bark.
