Description

The disease is caused by the ascomycete fungus Tripospora tripos, a specialized pathogen that primarily targets species within the Eucalyptus genus. This fungus is a significant concern in forestry and plant pathology due to its complex life cycle, during which it produces unique spores capable of spreading rapidly through wind dispersal and rain splash, facilitating widespread contamination.

The primary host plants susceptible to this pathogen are various eucalyptus species. It poses a significant threat to nursery seedlings and young plantations, where the plants are more vulnerable to severe stress. High-density planting strategies often exacerbate the issue by creating a microclimate that is conducive to the establishment and persistence of the fungus within the canopy.

Symptoms of the infection manifest as distinct leaf spots, which typically appear as necrotic lesions of brown or grayish coloration. As the infection progresses, these lesions often coalesce, leading to premature leaf abscission and significant defoliation. This loss of photosynthetic area severely impairs the plant's metabolic processes and weakens its ability to resist secondary pests or environmental stressors.

The development and spread of Tripospora tripos are heavily influenced by environmental conditions, specifically high relative humidity, frequent fog, and mild temperatures. These conditions create an ideal environment for spore germination and infection. Stagnant air within dense foliage further promotes the accumulation of inoculum and enhances the rate of infection across the entire stand.

The economic and ecological damage is primarily observed as reduced biomass increment and poor tree health. Effective management involves a combination of silvicultural practices, such as ensuring adequate spacing to improve air circulation, and the removal of infected plant material. In intensive nurseries, targeted fungicide applications are often necessary to suppress disease development and ensure the survival of young plants.
