Truncatella dieback is a fungal disease caused by members of the Truncatella genus, such as Truncatella angustata. This pathogen is a significant concern in plant pathology, particularly when it acts as an opportunistic parasite, colonizing stressed or wounded plant tissues in both ornamental and agricultural settings.

The disease affects a variety of hosts, including grapevines, citrus trees, and various woody ornamental plants. It typically enters the plant host through wounds caused by pruning, insects, frost damage, or sunburn, making compromised plants the primary targets for rapid infection.

Symptoms of the infection manifest as necrotic lesions on branches and shoots. As the fungus spreads, these spots darken and coalesce, leading to the collapse of bark tissues. Often, tiny black reproductive structures, known as pycnidia, erupt through the surface of the bark, releasing spores that continue the infection cycle.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development of the disease. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and poor air circulation within the plant canopy provide ideal conditions for spore germination and colonization. Warm, stagnant conditions accelerate the growth rate of the fungus within the vascular system of the host.

To manage Truncatella effectively, an integrated pest management strategy is essential.
