Description
The Trypetheliaceae family comprises a group of lichenized fungi that grow primarily on the bark of living trees. From an agricultural perspective, these organisms are considered epiphytes rather than pathogens. They do not penetrate the cambium or vascular tissues of the tree, instead using the bark surface simply as a substrate to anchor themselves and absorb moisture.
Biologically, these fungi are characterized by the formation of perithecia, often embedded within a dark, crust-like stroma. This structure allows them to thrive in various climates, particularly in humid environments where they can access nutrients from the air and water run-off. Their symbiotic relationship with algae is the core of their survival strategy.
These organisms colonize a wide range of woody plants, especially those in mature orchards or forests. Their presence is usually linked to the bark's age and surface texture rather than the plant's health status. While they are often associated with older, slower-growing trees, the lichens themselves do not inflict direct physical damage on the host tree.
Symptoms appear as small, dark spots or crusts on the outer layer of the bark. Unlike fungal infections that cause rot or cankers, the underlying plant tissues remain unaffected and functional. The presence of these organisms is often a sign of environmental stability and adequate humidity, rather than a cause for phytosanitary alarm.
Control measures are rarely necessary in commercial agriculture, as Trypetheliaceae do not cause yield loss. If removal is desired for aesthetic reasons, mechanical cleaning with a soft brush or a mild desiccant wash is sufficient. Proper orchard management, including consistent pruning to encourage airflow and light penetration, is the most effective way to manage the lichen population on tree trunks.
