Tubakia leaf spot

Pathogen and disease type. The disease is caused by the fungus Tubakia dryina, a common leaf pathogen. It belongs to the group of fungi responsible for foliar spotting. The pathogen survives primarily as mycelium in fallen leaves and twigs, acting as an opportunistic parasite that becomes highly active under favorable environmental conditions.

Host range. Tubakia dryina is known for its wide host range, primarily infecting oaks (Quercus spp.). However, it is also frequently identified on maples, chestnuts, beeches, elms, and hickories. Because it affects various shade and ornamental trees, it is a concern for nursery owners, landscape architects, and forestry managers across North America and beyond.

Symptoms and signs. Symptoms typically appear in mid-to-late summer. Affected leaves develop brown to reddish-brown necrotic spots or irregular blotches, sometimes surrounded by a distinct halo. Small, dark fungal fruiting bodies appear on the underside of the leaves within the lesions. Severe infection leads to premature leaf drop, which can be alarming to tree owners but rarely kills the tree outright.

Development and spread. The fungus thrives in warm, humid weather. Spores are dispersed by rain splashing or wind currents from infected leaf debris onto new foliage. High humidity levels and poor airflow within the tree canopy significantly accelerate the disease cycle, allowing the pathogen to spread rapidly throughout a stand or garden during the wet summer months.

Harmfulness and protection measures. While rarely fatal to established healthy trees, repeated annual defoliation can reduce tree vigor, making them more susceptible to drought, winter injury, and secondary pests like wood borers. Prevention is key:

• Practice strict sanitation by raking and removing fallen leaves in autumn.
• Prune branches to improve light penetration and air circulation.
• Use systemic fungicides in high-value nurseries if the disease pressure is high.
• Maintain tree vigor through proper watering and mulching to minimize environmental stress.
