Tubakia macnabbii is a pathogenic fungus responsible for causing a specific type of leaf spot disease on oak trees (Quercus spp.). As a member of the Tubakia genus, this fungus affects the foliage, leading to premature leaf drop and potential stress on the host tree. While it is rarely fatal to mature, healthy trees, repeated annual infections can significantly weaken younger or stressed individuals.
The host range of Tubakia macnabbii is predominantly centered on oak species. The fungus typically colonizes the leaf tissues, where it establishes its mycelial network. Infection is often observed in nurseries, landscape settings, and forests where moisture levels are high and the trees lack adequate airflow within the canopy, creating a microclimate conducive to fungal growth.
Symptomatology of the disease includes distinct spots on the leaf blades, which may vary in size and shape. These lesions often appear as dark brown or black spots, sometimes surrounded by a lighter halo. One of the definitive diagnostic signs is the presence of tiny, black, pimple-like fruiting bodies (pycnidia) found on the undersides of the infected leaves. The primary mode of transmission is through water splash and wind, which disperse the conidia from overwintered leaf litter to newly developing foliage.
