Tubakia leaf spot, caused by the fungus Tubakia paradryinoides, is a common and destructive fungal disease that primarily affects oak trees (Quercus species). This pathogen thrives by infecting the foliage, leading to premature leaf drop and reducing the overall vitality of affected trees over successive growing seasons.

The fungus is widely distributed in various environments, including forests, parks, and nurseries. It specifically targets the leaves of oaks, though it can occasionally be found on other hardwood species. The presence of the pathogen is often exacerbated in sites where air circulation is poor and humidity levels remain consistently high.

Symptoms of the disease become visible mid-to-late summer. They appear as tan, brown, or dark black necrotic spots on the leaf blades, often surrounded by a chlorotic halo. As the infection progresses, these lesions merge, causing significant leaf distortion, tissue death, and resulting in premature defoliation that can leave the tree canopy looking sparse.
