Truffles (genus Tuber) are a group of hypogeous ascomycete fungi that form symbiotic mycorrhizal relationships with the root systems of various tree and shrub species. While often viewed as a commodity, from an agronomic perspective, they are significant biological agents that alter the soil rhizosphere and influence the physiological health and mineral uptake of their host trees.

The fungus functions through a vegetative mycelium that colonizes the root tips of hosts such as Quercus (oak), Corylus (hazel), and Fagus (beech). This symbiosis is critical for the nutrient exchange process, where the fungus provides the host with essential minerals and phosphorus in exchange for photosynthetic carbohydrates produced by the tree.

Signs of fungal presence, often called 'brûlé' or 'burn' areas, occur where the mycelium suppresses competing vegetation around the tree trunk. These visible areas of reduced plant growth serve as indicators of the fungal expansion within the root zone, signaling a high level of colonization intensity.

The development and distribution of Tuber species are strictly dependent on environmental factors, specifically soil aeration, alkaline pH levels, and consistent soil moisture. They are highly sensitive to chemical fertilizers and pesticides, which can disrupt the delicate mycorrhizal balance required for the formation of the subterranean fruit bodies.

Management and preventative strategies in managed truffle orchards focus on preserving the subterranean ecology:

  • maintaining soil alkalinity through regular lime applications;
  • ensuring proper irrigation during drought stress;
  • avoiding synthetic fungicides that could damage the mycelium;
  • performing periodic soil structural analysis;
  • utilizing only verified mycorrhizal-inoculated saplings for planting.
