It is important to clarify that Tuber borchii, commonly known as the whitish truffle, is not a plant disease. It is a prized edible species of the Tuber genus that establishes ectomycorrhizal symbioses with the roots of trees. In agriculture, it should be treated as a beneficial symbiont rather than a pathogen, as it enhances nutrient uptake in its host plants.

The organism is an ascomycete fungus. It infects the root tips of host species, such as oak, pine, birch, and poplar, creating a sheath of mycelium. This interaction is mutualistic: the tree provides the fungus with carbohydrates, while the fungus provides the tree with essential minerals and improves water absorption from the soil profile.

Signs of its presence include the formation of bare soil areas around trees, where herbaceous plant growth is suppressed by the fungus's chemical environment. Detecting the fungus usually requires excavation of soil samples to look for the characteristic subterranean fruit bodies or identifying the mycorrhizal root structures during the growing season.

Favorable conditions for its development include well-aerated, sandy-loam or calcareous soils with a pH ranging from 6.5 to 8.0. The species thrives in temperate climates and is highly sensitive to waterlogging. It spreads primarily through spores, which can be dispersed by soil-dwelling fauna or transferred via human activities like moving nursery stock and equipment.

Management and control strategies for this species are focused on maintaining soil quality and environmental stability. If the presence of Tuber borchii needs to be limited, adjusting soil pH or altering irrigation patterns can create less favorable conditions for mycelial growth. Conversely, for truffle farming, strict control of competing fungi is essential to ensure a healthy yield.
