In certain horticultural contexts, it is monitored for its impact on the health of host trees, primarily affecting root functionality through competition for essential soil nutrients.
The causal agent belongs to the Ascomycota division. Its biology revolves around the development of subterranean ascocarps, which interact with the root system of woody plants. While this interaction is primarily symbiotic in nature, it can become detrimental when the fungal biomass exceeds the host's ability to maintain its nutritional needs.
Common host crops include various deciduous trees, such as oaks and hazelnuts. The infection manifests primarily in the root zone, where the presence of the fungus alters the symbiotic balance, often leading to a reduction in the uptake of water and micro-elements by the root hair cells.
