Description

Tubercularia, typically associated with the species Tubercularia vulgaris, is a significant fungal pathogen that causes dieback disease in a wide variety of woody plants. It is the asexual stage of the fungus Nectria cinnabarina, widely known as coral spot, which causes decay in the bark and sapwood of weakened host plants.

This pathogen affects a vast array of species, including fruit trees like apples and pears, as well as common landscape trees and shrubs such as maple, linden, and currant bushes. It is considered a facultative parasite, meaning it primarily exploits trees already stressed by drought, winter injury, or poor pruning practices.

The most distinctive symptom of the infection is the development of small, bright pink to orange-red pustules on the bark surface. These pustules represent the fruiting bodies of the fungus. As the disease progresses, the bark surrounding these spots becomes necrotic and sunken, leading to the death of distal branches and foliage.

Environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and mild temperatures, significantly favor the growth and dispersal of the fungal spores. Once the fungus colonizes the bark, it secretes toxins that disrupt the plant's vascular system, causing rapid wilting and branch death, which can be devastating to tree structure.

Effective management and prevention of this disease require a proactive approach to plant health:

  • prune and remove infected branches immediately, cutting well back into healthy tissue;
  • sterilize pruning tools after each cut to prevent cross-contamination;
  • apply copper-based fungicides as a preventative measure during the dormant season;
  • maintain plant vigor through proper fertilization, irrigation, and soil management to reduce susceptibility.
