It plays a critical role in forest ecosystems by parasitizing the fruiting bodies of various rust pathogens, specifically those that belong to the order Pucciniales and infect coniferous tree species.
The primary host for this fungus is often the pathogen responsible for pine blister rust, Cronartium flaccidum. Tuberculina maxima aggressively colonizes the aecia and sporulating tissues of the rust fungus, effectively halting its reproductive cycle by destroying its hyphae and preventing the dissemination of new spores.
The diagnostic symptoms of Tuberculina maxima are characterized by the development of distinctive purple, reddish-brown, or violet-colored cushion-like structures or pustules on the infected areas of the host tree's bark. These structures emerge directly over the rust infections, eventually covering them completely and signaling the decline of the rust pathogen.
The environmental conditions favoring the development of this hyperparasite are high humidity and moderate temperatures, which are essential for both the growth of the host rust fungus and the subsequent spread of Tuberculina maxima.
