Description
Tubulicium disease is a pathological condition of plants caused by fungi belonging to the genus Tubulicium. These basidiomycetes are known to colonize wood and bark surfaces, leading to tissue degradation and decay. While often found in forest environments, they can become problematic in orchards and managed landscapes, particularly when trees are under stress.
The host range of Tubulicium species is primarily composed of various woody plants, including fruit trees and ornamental shrubs. The pathogen typically establishes itself in crevices of the bark or in areas where the protective outer layer of the plant has been compromised. Over time, it can cause deep-seated decay, affecting the cambium and the structural integrity of the affected branches.
Symptoms are often manifested as a specialized fungal coating that may appear whitish or cream-colored. As the infection progresses, the bark begins to crack, peel, or change in texture, indicating internal necrosis. Infected plants show symptoms of overall decline, such as chlorosis, leaf drop, and dieback of terminal branches, which can eventually lead to the loss of the plant if left untreated.
Environmental conditions play a decisive role in the spread of the disease. High humidity, cool temperatures, and inadequate air circulation within the plant canopy create a perfect microclimate for Tubulicium spore germination and growth. Neglected gardens with high plant density are particularly vulnerable to outbreaks as moisture stays trapped in the inner parts of the canopy for longer periods.
Effective management and protection strategies are crucial to mitigating the spread of the fungus. The following integrated approach is recommended:
- Performing regular sanitary pruning to remove infected branches and restore airflow.
- Applying fungicides to fresh pruning wounds to prevent fungal entry.
- Implementing proper watering techniques to keep foliage dry.
- Enhancing tree vigor through balanced fertilization and stress reduction.
