It functions as a pathogen that primarily colonizes the bark and woody tissues of various plants. While it often behaves as a saprotroph, under specific stress conditions for the host plant, it can exhibit pathogenic properties, contributing to the decay of the outer bark layers.

The host range of this fungus typically includes various deciduous trees, with particular susceptibility noted in alder, birch, and other hardwood species. It is most frequently encountered on stems and branches that have become weakened due to environmental stress, drought, or previous mechanical injury. Once established, the fungus can extend its mycelial growth across significant areas of the bark surface.

Identification of the disease relies on observing the fungal hymenophore, which appears as a crust-like, thin, and often pale or yellowish layer adhering to the bark. Advanced stages of the infection are characterized by the softening of the cortical tissue, visible necrotic spots, and eventually, the peeling of the bark from the woody cylinder. This process disrupts the plant's ability to maintain homeostasis and creates entry points for secondary pathogens.

The fungus thrives in environments with high humidity levels and limited air circulation, which are essential for spore germination and colonization.
