The Tubulicrinaceae family consists of basidiomycete fungi primarily recognized for their role as wood-decay agents in forest ecosystems. While they are not major pathogens of annual field crops, their ecological function is vital in breaking down complex organic matter, though they can become problematic in perennial orchards.
The disease mechanism involves the production of extracellular enzymes that degrade lignin and cellulose within the wood tissue. This process classifies the damage as either white or brown rot, which significantly weakens the internal structure of the tree, making it susceptible to secondary infections and structural failure.
Common hosts include various deciduous and coniferous trees. In an agricultural context, these fungi typically colonize orchards that are adjacent to wooded areas, especially those trees that have sustained previous damage from frost, pruning, or pest activity. They do not typically infect healthy, actively growing tissue.
Symptoms often remain cryptic until advanced stages of decay. Signs include structural softening, discoloration of the timber, and the emergence of thin, crust-like fruiting bodies on the bark or within crevices. In advanced stages, the structural integrity of the main trunk is compromised, leading to safety concerns.
