Description

The Tulasnellaceae family consists of basidiomycete fungi that primarily exist as mycorrhizal partners, but certain species are recognized as significant plant pathogens causing root decay. These fungi, particularly those in the genus Tulasnella, can opportunistically attack plants when environmental conditions compromise the root system's health.

The disease is classified as a root rot, which targets the absorbing roots and the root neck of the host. By disrupting the symbiotic or vascular functions of the roots, the pathogen prevents the plant from absorbing necessary nutrients and water, ultimately leading to stunted growth or total plant collapse.

Typical crops affected include ornamental plants, greenhouse vegetables, and various orchid species. Early symptoms often include yellowish foliage, wilting during peak sunlight, and brown, mushy lesions on the roots that are easily visible upon inspecting the root system in soil-less or potting media.

Development and spread are favored by persistently damp soil conditions, poor drainage, and high humidity in confined growing spaces. The fungi propagate through mycelial growth in the soil or substrate and are easily transported via contaminated tools, irrigation runoff, or infected planting material brought into a nursery or greenhouse environment.

Integrated pest management is critical for controlling Tulasnellaceae outbreaks. Effective strategies include improving soil drainage, ensuring the use of sterile growing media, and maintaining proper sanitation protocols for all horticultural tools. Chemical treatments involving specific systemic fungicides and biological control agents like Trichoderma species have shown success in suppressing pathogen colonization.
