Tulostoma niveum is a species of gasteroid fungus that belongs to the Agaricaceae family. While often considered a soil saprotroph, under specific environmental conditions, it can colonize the rhizosphere of certain plants, leading to physiological stress and potential disruption of nutrient uptake from the soil matrix.

The pathogen is primarily distributed through spores that germinate in organic-rich soils. The type of infection is classified as a root-zone fungal stress, where the proliferation of fungal mycelium around the base of the plant hinders the development of secondary roots and disrupts the water-conducting tissues of the host.

Affected crops include various ornamental species, grasses, and certain nursery seedlings. The fungus is most frequently observed in sandy or disturbed soil environments where nitrogen levels are imbalanced, making the plants more susceptible to opportunistic colonization by the mycelium of Tulostoma niveum.

Key symptoms include stunted growth, chlorosis, and the sudden wilting of the plant. A white, cotton-like mycelial mat may appear at the soil surface near the stem. In advanced stages, one can see the distinctive stalked fruit bodies emerging from the soil, indicating a high concentration of fungal activity.

To prevent and manage this fungus, it is essential to focus on soil health management. This includes improving drainage, avoiding excessive organic mulch accumulation near stems, and ensuring balanced fertilization. If an infestation occurs, applying soil-drench fungicides can help suppress the fungal population and allow the plants to recover.
