It is important to clarify that Tylopilus is not a plant disease but a genus of fungi belonging to the Boletaceae family. In agricultural and forestry contexts, Tylopilus species are not pathogens; they do not cause plant decay, blight, or vascular diseases, but rather serve as beneficial components of forest ecosystems.

The most prominent member of this genus is Tylopilus felleus, commonly known as the bitter bolete. This fungus forms ectomycorrhizal associations with the root systems of various woody species, including pine, spruce, and deciduous trees. This symbiotic interaction enhances the nutrient uptake efficiency of the host plant.

The presence of Tylopilus is often identified by the appearance of its sporocarps near the root zones of mature trees. Unlike parasitic fungi, the mycelium of Tylopilus does not invade or damage living plant cells. It exists in the rhizosphere, trading soil minerals and water for carbohydrates provided by the host tree.

There is no economic harm associated with Tylopilus. It does not negatively impact crop yields, tree health, or fruit quality. Its primary significance for landowners and foresters is its inedibility due to an intense bitter taste, which prevents it from being used as a commercial food product, unlike true porcini mushrooms.

No protection or eradication measures are necessary for Tylopilus. As a natural symbiont, it contributes to the overall health and resilience of the soil microbiome. Maintaining these mycorrhizal networks is essential for promoting the vigor of forest stands and helping young seedlings establish themselves effectively in various soil types.
