Typhula blight, caused by fungi of the genus Typhula, is a destructive plant disease commonly referred to as speckled snow mold. This pathogen specializes in attacking winter cereals and perennial grasses, causing significant damage during extended winters with prolonged snow cover.
The primary hosts include winter wheat, winter barley, rye, and various turfgrass species. The disease becomes apparent in early spring as snow melts, revealing characteristic mats of white to greyish-pink fungal mycelium covering the plants at the soil surface.
The main symptoms involve the rotting of crown tissues, leading to the yellowing and death of tillers. A definitive sign of the disease is the presence of small, seed-like structures called sclerotia, which form on the decaying leaves and crowns. These sclerotia are the primary survival mechanism for the pathogen in the soil during the summer months.
Disease development is highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically prolonged snow cover over unfrozen or lightly frozen soil, combined with cool, wet weather. These conditions provide a stable microclimate that allows the fungus to colonize plant tissues even at temperatures slightly below zero.
Management of Typhula blight requires an integrated approach. Essential strategies include the use of resistant crop varieties, proper crop rotation to break the infection cycle, and the application of effective seed treatments or late-autumn foliar fungicides. Balancing nitrogen fertilizer applications is also crucial, as excessive growth before dormancy can make plants more susceptible.
