Description
Tyromyces is a genus of wood-decay fungi within the family Polyporaceae. These organisms are primarily responsible for brown rot, a type of wood decomposition where the fungus selectively degrades cellulose and hemicellulose while leaving the lignin modified, resulting in a dark, brittle, and cracked wood structure.
The fungus acts as a facultative parasite, often infecting trees through wounds, broken branches, or natural fissures in the bark. Once inside, the mycelium colonizes the heartwood or sapwood, depending on the specific species of Tyromyces, eventually producing sporocarps (fruiting bodies) that release spores into the environment.
Tyromyces species are commonly found on a wide range of host plants, including various deciduous trees and some conifers. While they play a vital role in forest ecosystems by recycling dead wood, their presence in residential orchards, parks, or commercial plantations is considered harmful as it compromises the structural integrity of valuable trees.
The symptoms of a Tyromyces infection are quite distinctive. In advanced stages, you will observe the wood breaking into cube-like blocks when crushed by hand, a process known as cubical cracking. On the exterior of the trunk or branches, one can see shelf-like or effused-reflexed fungal fruiting bodies, which indicate extensive internal colonization.
Management of Tyromyces requires rigorous prevention. Since chemical control is often limited once the fungus is deeply established, the focus should be on physical removal of infected parts and proper wound management. Strategies include:
- Regular pruning of dead or decaying branches to prevent fungal entry.
- Sterilizing pruning equipment to avoid cross-contamination.
- Applying protective sealants to pruning wounds.
- Monitoring overall tree health to reduce stress that makes trees susceptible to infection.
