Tyromyces chioneus is a wood-rotting fungus belonging to the Polyporaceae family, recognized as an agent of white rot in various hardwood species. In terms of arboriculture, it acts primarily as a saprotroph, but can become a significant opportunistic pathogen on weakened trees, compromising their structural stability.

The fungus predominantly targets broad-leaved trees, including birch, alder, and willow. While it is commonly found on fallen logs and stumps, it readily colonizes living trees that have been compromised by mechanical damage, pruning wounds, or severe weather stress, which provide entry points for the fungal mycelium.

The primary symptom of an infestation is the emergence of annual, soft, fleshy, and white-colored fruit bodies on the bark. As the internal infection progresses, the wood undergoes chemical degradation of its lignin and cellulose components, resulting in a fibrous, bleached appearance and a significant loss of structural strength.

The development and spread of Tyromyces chioneus are heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. The fungus releases basidiospores which are dispersed by air currents, and upon landing on exposed wood surfaces, they germinate to establish new infection sites within the host tissue.
