Ulea is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Meliolales, which causes specific fungal infections on plants, often associated with sooty mold development. As an obligate parasite, the fungus colonizes the surface of plant tissues, forming a dark, dense mycelial mat.

The pathology primarily affects the surface of leaves and stems. By creating a physical barrier on the leaf surface, the fungus hinders photosynthesis, blocks stomata, and disrupts gas exchange. While it does not invade deep tissue cells, it significantly reduces the plant's overall vigor and can lead to premature leaf drop.

Host plants for Ulea are predominantly found in tropical and subtropical regions, including various shrubs and vines with coriaceous leaves. The fungus thrives where the environment provides consistent high moisture and a food source, such as the sugary exudates secreted by sap-sucking insects like aphids or scale insects.

The spread of this pathogen is accelerated by poor ventilation and high humidity, which create an ideal microclimate for spore germination. Spores are primarily disseminated by air currents and water splashes during irrigation, allowing the fungus to move between closely placed plants in a short period.

  • Implementing integrated pest management (IPM) to control insects that excrete honeydew.
  • Reducing relative humidity in confined environments like greenhouses.
