Umbelopsis dimorpha is a filamentous fungus found primarily in soil environments, belonging to the Zygomycota phylum. While often associated with the decomposition of organic matter, this organism can act as an opportunistic pathogen, infecting the root systems of various plants when environmental conditions become favorable for fungal proliferation.

The host range of Umbelopsis dimorpha includes a wide variety of crops, spanning from greenhouse vegetables to open-field cereal grains. The pathogen typically targets the root zone, where it utilizes root exudates to proliferate, eventually penetrating the epidermal tissues of the roots and disrupting the plant's ability to transport water and essential nutrients.

Symptoms of an infection often mimic typical root rot diseases, including stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and wilting during the hottest parts of the day. Upon physical examination of the root system, one may observe darkening, water-soaked lesions, and a reduction in the overall mass of fine root hairs, which compromises the plant's stability and nutrient uptake.

The fungus is disseminated primarily through movement of infested soil, contaminated irrigation water, and infected seedlings or propagation materials transported between fields or greenhouses.
