Undaria pinnatifida, commonly known as Wakame, is a brown macroalgae that is internationally recognized as a highly invasive species. While commercially valued in aquaculture in its native range, outside of it, the species acts as a biological threat to coastal ecosystems by outcompeting native marine flora for space and essential nutrients.

The causative agent of the ecological disruption is the prolific reproductive cycle of the algae, which releases millions of spores into the water column. In an environmental management context, the "disease" caused by this organism is defined as a biological invasion. It negatively impacts local seaweed beds and bivalve populations, leading to significant shifts in the balance of coastal benthic communities.
